Mrs. Deb Debettencourt
Hello Parents,
I’m Deb DeBettencourt. I have worked at the Edgartown School since 1993 as one of the Guidance Counselors and am excited to now be the Assistant Principal. In this new position, I find myself continuing the work of building relationships and connections amongst students, families, and staff. My goal is to create a nurturing environment where students can develop the skills necessary to open doors to their future and find their passion. In order for students to be successful in this endeavor, I aim to support teachers and staff so that they can educate and serve our students with their own intention and inspiration. In supporting staff, students, and families, I am visiting classrooms, monitoring the hallways, cafeteria and recess, conferencing with students and making phone calls to share both successes and challenges at home. I am a problem solver and communicator at heart and look forward to partnering with you.
I grew up on Long Island and first summered on the Vineyard with college friends from Bucknell University in 1988. I met my husband, Ken during the second week I lived here. My first job on the island was at Reliable Market! I worked for several summers as the receptionist in the Emergency Room of the old hospital. I first started working at the Edgartown School under the leadership of Ed Jerome and the mentorship of Mike Joyce, in the office of the old building where students would leave their names painted on the wall as they graduated. This tradition has continued into the current school building along with many other events. I am proud to have been a part of helping to create Recognition Day, a relatively new tradition borne out of our school philosophy which recognizes the whole child.
Ken and I have raised our two grown children who attended The Oak Bluffs School, The West Tisbury School and MVRHS! I have been a part of each of these school communities as a parent. However, my second home is truly the Edgartown School. I care deeply about this community and the students and families we serve. I returned to school to obtain my administrators license during the pandemic, upon reflecting on my personal fulfillment when relied upon for challenging work, decision making, organization, and management. I see the needs of the school through the lens of someone who has been a part of its history over time with a vision for equity amongst each of our students, rigorous instruction, clear expectations, and collaboration of efforts towards professional development and curriculum.
I look forward to this opportunity to serve our students, staff and families. When I’m not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family, playing tennis with friends, and traveling!
